Join Emily from Plantie Mems to create your very own Mushroom Grove Terrarium! Our latest edition of terrarium classes includes a large glass cylinder vessel, planting substrate and terrarium-friendly plants, and plenty of decor to make your mushroom house a mushroom home. You'll be free to decorate your terrarium as you wish, but we'll focus this workshop on mushrooms, their meaning within witchcraft, and fairy rings (the circles of mushrooms you'll see in fields or woodlands). If weather permits, we'll hold this class outside.
"Many of us, when out and about in woodland or open grassy areas have probably encountered a perfect circle of mushrooms. These are known as fairy rings, elf rings or pixie rings, and are caused by the way mushrooms grow, underground, from a single spore. These sprout fine tubular filaments called hyphae which eventually grow outwards, forming a perfect circle of mycelia. A year later, the adult mushrooms appear out of the ground at the edge of the circle, creating the fairy ring. Although the mushrooms themselves last for only a few days, the mycelia may live for hundreds of years, producing an ever-widening circle of mushrooms each year. Thus, in English and Celtic folklore, fairy rings were thought to be caused by fairies or elves dancing or celebrating in a circle. They were portals to the fairy realm and that, if humans joined in the dancing, or even stepped inside the ring, they would be punished by being made to continue dancing until they passed out from exhaustion. They could be transported to the fairy realm or at least become invisible to the human world." - Alan Crooks of the Salisbury Museum
While the mushrooms we'll work with aren't real, we'll celebrate the whimsy and wonder of mushrooms and fairy rings by creating a space to manifest those qualities. Each ticket is $60, and the class begins promptly at 6:30pm at Thirteen Circles in Conshohocken. While there is no age limit, small resin and crystal decor items may be considered hazardous, therefore any attendee under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
