Beltane is an ancient Gaelic festival that marks the beginning of summer, traditionally observed on May 1st. It has roots in Celtic paganism and is celebrated in various forms across Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. The name "Beltane" is believed to come from the Old Irish words "Bel taine," meaning "bright fire,"

One of the most recognizable symbols of Beltane is the maypole, which likely has its origins in Germanic pagan traditions before being adopted into Celtic celebrations. The maypole is typically a tall wooden pole adorned with flowers, ribbons, and other decorations. It symbolizes the fertility of the earth and serves as a focal point for dancing and merriment during Beltane festivities.

The tradition of dancing around the maypole involves weaving colorful ribbons around the pole as participants move in opposite directions, creating intricate patterns. This ritual is believed to symbolize the intertwining of energies, as well as the union of earth and sky, which are central themes of Beltane.
