Warding Veils: An Italian Protection Magick Workshop
In Southern Italy and Sicily, protection has never been an individual practice; it has always been relational, communal, and embedded in everyday life. From the malocchio (evil eye) to red thread, horns, saints, herbs, and whispered prayers, people have long relied on charms and symbols to move safely through the world.
This workshop is an exploration of the visual and symbolic language of apotropaic protection in Southern Italian and Sicilian folk culture. Rather than focusing on spellwork or fear-based magic, we’ll study the meanings behind traditional charms, gestures, objects, and how they functioned historically, and what they still carry today.
Together, we will then create brevi bags and exchange them with one another as a collective ritual of care, intention, and protection
Jenna Faccenda is an Italian American folk practitioner, clinical herbalist and writer. When she isn’t tending to her son, puppy, or cats, she is working with her ancestors through Widow Apothecary. Her teachings and practices come from her findings through her southern Italian roots of Sicily and Campania, and her teachers on the plant path (Kimberly Geisler, Brooke Johnson, Janet Kent, Dave Meesters, Jen Stovall, Marybeth Bonfiglio, Lisa Fazio, and Lupo Passero). You can follow Jenna at @widowapothecary.
